-

On REI’s Wild Ideas Worth Living podcast, Glen reunites with his friend host Shelby Stanger. They discuss meeting at a Girl Scout presentation, Glen’s early involvement in the outdoors, his cross-country bicycle trip in 1976, the founding of Gossamer Gear, the benefits of going lighter and how those extend into all of life, and of course… the Crotch Pot.

The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) is a route from Banff, Canada to Antelope Wells, New Mexico, traveling 2,700 miles along mostly gravel and dirt roads. When Glen’s neighbor proposed bikepacking 900 miles of it from the Canadian border to Jackson, Wyoming, Glen had to apply his hard-won lessons in ultralight backpacking to bikepacking. Since the last time he camped on a bike was when he rode 4200 miles across the U.S. in 1976, he had a lot of catchup to do before departure.

He didn’t have to carry a sleeping bag or tent, but also wanted to look nice for the dinners in nice restaurants. This might be my all-time favorite time on a podcast, and that’s a high bar, because I’m hiking with two hosts, and in regular touch with a couple more, and one is going to visit us in Bend. Hosts Wesley and Marie Black earned instant spots on The List through a rambling, super fun discussion.
-

Join host Andrew Jobling as he digs into the impacts of Glen’s parents’ divorce on his young life, and why spaghetti would often result in an upset stomach. We also talk about the importance of margin, the 1976 cross-country bicycle trip. You’ll see why Andrew feels like such a kindred spirit to me.
